The Dalton School

FOCUS:
Creative, independent critical thinkers
Considered pedagogically progressive when founded by educational pioneer Helen Pankhurst in 1919, the self-motivated, independent learning ethos of the Dalton School continues into the 21st Century. The ‘Dalton Plan’, advocates moving away from traditional didactic teaching and focusing instead on three pillars of learning, ‘house,’ ‘assignment’ and ‘lab’. With the support and structure of ‘Home Bases’ and house advisors the aim is to empower each child to make their own educational choices, through a process of identifying their interests and taking responsibility for them. A rich Arts program also exists at the school to encourage pupil creativity and a newly built ‘Lab for Teaching and Learning’ guides pupils to use technology innovatively to aid learning.
